One of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2026, Christopher Nolan and Matt Damon’s The Odyssey, finally opens in movie theaters this weekend. I can't help but feel that it's going to be epic. Get it? Because it’s an adaptation of a literal epic? I think it's a clever play on words, and it sets the tone for what promises to be a truly remarkable cinematic experience.
Written and directed by Nolan—fresh off his Oscar wins for Best Director and Best Picture for Oppenheimer—the 2026 The Odyssey movie is a retelling of the famous Greek epic poem by Homer, which tells the story of Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, and his long journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus himself, while Anne Hathaway stars as his wife Penelope, and Tom Holland stars as his son Telemachus, who await his return at home. The all-star cast also includes Robert Pattinson as the suitor Antinous, Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, and Himesh Patel as Eurylochus.
There’s no doubt that The Odyssey is the type of film meant to be seen on the big screen. But if you really don’t feel like going to the movies to see The Odyssey in theaters, then read on to find out where and when we expect to be able to watch The Odyssey movie on streaming.

The Odyssey will only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in the U.S. on Friday, July 17, in theaters nationwide. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. The Odyssey is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.
Is The Odyssey 2026 movie streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video?
The Odyssey is not streaming on Netflix, and likely will not be on Netflix any time soon, due to the fact that the film is a Universal release, and not a Netflix movie. Almost all Universal movies go to the NBCUniversal streaming platform, Peacock.
You will be able to purchase The Odyssey on Prime Video eventually, when the movie becomes available to buy and rent on digital. You will also eventually be able to stream The Odyssey on Prime Video, free with a Prime subscription, four months after the movie streams on Peacock.
This is thanks to the deal between Universal and Amazon that sends Universal movies to Peacock for the first four months of the “Pay 1 window,” then to Amazon Prime Video for the next months of the window, followed by four more months on Peacock. If our prediction for when The Odyssey will be on Peacock is correct, then you should see The Odyssey streaming on Prime around April 2027.
But the first place you’ll be able to watch The Odyssey movie at home will be to buy or rent on digital platforms, followed by a streaming release on Peacock.

The The Odyssey streaming release date on Peacock has not yet been announced, but you will likely see the The Odyssey movie streaming on Peacock later this year. Another Universal release, Reminders of Him, began streaming on Peacock about four months after the movie opened in theaters.
If The Odyssey follows a similar release pattern, you might see the movie on digital in about a month, around August 2026, and streaming on Peacock around November 2026. That said, this is a highly-anticipated release, and Christopher Nolan is known for wanting to keep his films in theaters, so you may have to wait a little longer before you see The Odyssey on digital or streaming.
This is all speculation. Universal has not had a consistent digital release strategy. It varies by title. If you want to watch The Odyssey movie right away, your best bet is to catch the movie in theaters.
Personally, I think that The Odyssey is a film that truly deserves to be experienced on the big screen. But for now, the best way to see The Odyssey is to head to the theater and immerse yourself in the epic tale of Odysseus' journey home.
